Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is this calculator?
This calculator uses 2024 federal tax brackets for the US and current Chinese individual income tax rates. It provides estimates based on standard deductions only. State/local taxes, FICA, and other deductions are not included.
What is the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?
Your marginal tax rate is the rate applied to your last dollar of income. Your effective tax rate is your total tax divided by total income, giving you the average rate you actually pay across all brackets.
Does this include Social Security and Medicare taxes?
No, this calculator only computes federal income tax (US) or individual income tax (China). Social Security, Medicare (FICA), and state taxes are not included in the calculation.
How does the Net→Gross feature work?
When you toggle to Net→Gross mode, you enter your desired take-home pay and the calculator works backward to find the gross salary needed to achieve that net amount after taxes.
How is China's individual income tax calculated?
China uses a progressive tax system with 7 brackets ranging from 3% to 45%. A standard monthly deduction of ¥5,000 (¥60,000/year) is applied before calculating the taxable income. The calculator uses the cumulative withholding method.
